REST DAY

Introducing rest day questions! Every rest day I'll post a question, or maybe just food for thought. Let everyone know what you think by posting your response in the comments section. Physical fitness is only half the equation. The other half, our mental fitness, allows us to crush our opponents in competition and/or gets us to workout on a day when we don't feel like it. Rest day questions give us a chance to exercise our mental muscles.

So, without further ado:

If you had to do one movement (pullups, cleans, etc.) to maintain your fitness, what would it be and why?

  1. If I HAD to choose just ONE (which is very difficult for me) I would pick the BURPEE!

There are so many different movements inside the burpee that I feel it is a total body workout. If you break it down, and work with me a little here, when completing a burpee, if you don't just flop to the ground, the first part is completing a push up using the upper body (arms, shoulders, back) and core. When coming off the ground and driving the legs and hips forward then immediately going into the squat jump (squrpee), the core and lower body (back, hips and legs) are all activated. The entire body has to work together to complete this movement.

Some major advantages of the burpee are you can do them anywhere at any time, no equipment is needed, and you can do burpees at any fitness level with minimal injury risk!

I'm not sure how many of you did yesterdays WOD but doing them for 5 minutes is a great workout. I might try it this week sometime. My goal is to get 100 in 5 minutes!
Hope you all had a great weekend! See you tomorrow!

  2. My vote is burpee-pull-ups. After my WOD yesterday--burpees are what kicked my butt the worst.
    Can not wait till tomorrow!!!

  3. Ahh! Courtney beat me to it! My answer would be the BURPEE too. Although, my first thought was the Clean & Jerk. (I <3 them.)I love to hear the crashing of weights. lol At this time, I don't have a bar at home-C & J would be out of the question. That's why I would substitue the beloved burpee. Obviously, the movement would have to be something that involves the whole body. (Court described how the burpee does very well)

  4. Well, I have been thinking of my answer all day long and finally decided to log in and post a response. I have to admit that many answers popped into my head regarding this question (burpees, push ups, sit ups, slam balls (really miss slam balls....just ordered one for home :), the dreaded run and a few others). Since Court's response about burpees was outstanding, I decided that a series of planks would be my answer (not the best answer I know, but since I have been working on building my core, it makes sense for me). No, I am not talking about planking! Many muscles are engaged during planks and planks help develop and maintain core strength which is needed for many CF moves. Planks don't have to take a whole lot of time and can be completed anywhere, but they will help you build your core which will help you with your strength goals. Check out this blog from CF Las Vegas about core strength: http://www.crossfitlasvegas.com/2012/core-strength.

Looking forward to tomorrow. Thanks, Ronin Fitness, for keeping us together for training!

  5. Sorry, have been out of town, but I would have to agree with Michelle that a variation of the burpee would be the single movement I would keep in shape with. Burpee builds muscle for every day use but lacks building fast-twitch muscles for explosive movements. So I would have to say that the movement I choose.....drum roll please........Burpee - box jump!
